Welp, we did it.  We laid out our sleeping bags and slept on the floor of our hotel's check in office.  There was no other choice but to.  We had arrived at the bus station in Bagan at 3:30 am.  The ride from Inle was a short, but windy 6 1/2 hours, kind of an awkward "overnight" trip.  Luckliy there were (unfortunately overcharging) taxis waiting for we would have been left out in the cold parking lot in the middle of the night.  Our hotel was dark and obviously closed when we arrived... but the office door was not locked.  We woke up the front desk guy - who was asleep on the floor behind the desk.  He told us we could probably check in at 8 am once other guests had left, but that we could sleep on the floor until then.  I'm not even going to post a photo of this office floor... but enjoy this little diddy just like the ones that played on the TV on the bus ride, the whole time:
